For wrinkles, sun damage, selected pigmentation concerns, acne scars and uneven texture, luma offers resurfacing with our erbium laser. Our Dermablate erbium laser offers fractional and full-field ablative settings that can be tailored to your needs.
Resurfacing may help soften the appearance of certain lines and scars or improve skin texture. An assessment starts with the changes you notice, the result you hope for and the recovery you can plan for.
Fine lines and deeper lines
Fine lines, wrinkles and more deeply etched lines can respond well to laser resurfacing. At luma, 2–4 sessions are typically recommended for these concerns, depending on your treatment plan and response. Results can be long-lasting, but vary from person to person.
Uneven texture and sun-related changes
Roughness, some discolouration and other changes associated with chronic sun exposure can be improved with the Dermablate erbium laser. Your consultation helps identify which skin-colour concerns are suitable for resurfacing.
Acne Scars
Pitted and boxcar acne scars can be improved with a series of erbium laser treatments. Raised (hypertrophic) scars need individual assessment and may require a different approach.
Dermablate uses an erbium laser called Er:YAG. Its energy is absorbed by water in the skin and, at resurfacing settings, removes the top layers of skin. This is called ablative treatment. The treated skin then needs to heal.
At luma, resurfacing can use fractional or full-field coverage, with targeted deeper work for individual lines or scars when appropriate. These describe how an area is treated, rather than a fixed result or recovery time.
Fractional ablative resurfacing
The laser treats a pattern of small spots, leaving skin between them untreated. Fractional describes this pattern; it still involves removal of the top layers of skin and recovery.
Full-field ablative resurfacing
The laser treats the entire surface of the selected treatment area. Full-field does not necessarily mean the whole face; it can be targeted to concerns such as lines around the mouth or a particular scar. The depth and area treated affect the healing plan.
Preparation and aftercare
You will receive clear instructions on how to prepare before your appointment and how to care for your skin after treatment. You will go home with an aftercare kit.
Healing time varies with the treatment and your skin. Redness, swelling, peeling or crusting can occur; risks include infection, a cold-sore flare-up, longer-lasting redness, darker or lighter skin patches and scarring. Your provider will discuss the risks and recovery for your plan.
Pricing and your next step
Fees are in Canadian dollars, plus GST:
Full-face erbium resurfacing: $1,979 + GST.
Partial-face erbium resurfacing: $1,599 + GST.
Full-face resurfacing + COOL BLEPH: $2,799 + GST. COOL BLEPH includes upper and lower eyelid treatment and a take-home care kit.
Your consultation confirms suitability and your treatment plan, including the exact area for partial-face resurfacing.
Your provider may recommend platelet-rich fibrin as an optional addition at the end of treatment, for an additional cost.
How do fractional and full-field ablative resurfacing settings differ?
Fractional treatment covers small spots with untreated skin between them. Full-field treatment treats the entire surface within the selected treatment area, not necessarily the whole face. Both are ablative, meaning they remove the top layers of skin. The choice depends on your concern, skin and healing plan.
How much time off should I plan?
Although healing can vary, all patients must stay home for two days after treatment and follow specific aftercare instructions. Your skin may continue healing after those two days. Your return to work and activities depends on your healing and your provider's guidance, with strict sun protection and continued aftercare.
Can erbium resurfacing treat acne scars?
It may improve the appearance of selected acne scars, but scar type and depth affect the choice of treatment. Some scars need a different or combined approach; options such as TCA CROSS or subcision can be discussed during your consultation.
Can darker skin tones be treated?
Compared to CO2 lasers, erbium lasers can generally treat a broader range of skin types. Suitability needs an individual assessment. Skin tone and a history of skin-colour changes affect the risks, including darker or lighter patches after treatment. Your provider can explain whether resurfacing or another option is appropriate for your skin.
Is erbium better than CO2 laser resurfacing?
Although there are pros and cons to each, erbium may involve less downtime and a lower risk of pigment changes. The comparison depends on the treatment depth, coverage and your skin. Discuss the best option for you during your consultation at luma.
Can I book erbium resurfacing online?
This treatment is arranged through the clinic rather than booked directly online. Contact luma to ask about assessment, price inclusions and the next step.
