Dermal Filler

Filler planning for volume and contour

A consultation-led approach to facial balancing, product choice, and conservative placement for lips, cheeks, jawline, and other appropriate areas.

Facial balancing with dermal filler

Dermal fillers are injectable gels used for volume, contour, and soft tissue structure. Many fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, a substance that binds water and comes in different consistencies depending on the treatment area. Other injectable options, including Sculptra and Radiesse, work differently and are used when collagen stimulation or firmer structural support is the priority.

At luma rejuvenation, filler planning is not just about adding volume. Your provider assesses facial shape, symmetry, movement, proportions, skin quality, and how your features work together at rest and in expression.

Comfort and pain management

We take pain management seriously at luma, so you can feel relaxed during your appointment. We use a combination of techniques, including:

  • Topical numbing
  • Injectable numbing (lidocaine)
  • Pro Nox inhaled gas, to ease pain and treatment anxiety
  • Ice and vibrational tools

Talk with your provider about which combination is right for you.

Video transcript

Hyaluronic acid fillers have a long track record in cosmetic medicine. At luma, we plan conservative amounts to support subtle, natural-looking results. Your injector's training and judgment matter, especially because certain areas of the face are higher risk. When appropriate, we may use techniques such as ultrasound imaging before and after treatment as an added safety tool.

Where filler fits

Lips and perioral area

Filler can refine lip shape, border definition, asymmetry, or volume. See lip filler for more focused lip treatment information.

Cheeks, temples, and midface

Restoring volume in these areas can improve facial balance and soften the appearance of age-related hollowing.

Jawline, chin, and profile

Filler can shape contour, projection, or transition points when anatomy and skin quality are suitable, including nonsurgical rhinoplasty or "liquid nose job" planning for selected patients.

Folds and fine lines

Filler can soften nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and some etched lines, often alongside wrinkle relaxants or skin treatments.

What to expect at your appointment

Your visit begins with a consultation and facial assessment. Your provider reviews photos when helpful, discusses previous injectable treatments, explains product choice, and outlines where filler is or is not appropriate. If you proceed, the skin is cleansed, treatment areas are marked if needed, and filler is placed with a needle or cannula depending on the area and treatment plan.

Comfort Many fillers contain lidocaine. Topical numbing or other comfort measures can be used.
Downtime Swelling, tenderness, redness, and bruising are common and usually temporary.
Results Some change is visible right away, but swelling needs time to settle.
Longevity Duration varies by product, area, metabolism, dose, and movement.

Candidacy, recovery, and safety

Dermal filler is not appropriate if you have active infection or inflammation near the treatment area, certain allergies, a history of severe allergic reactions, bleeding concerns, or other medical factors your provider identifies during consultation. Pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed before any injectable treatment.

Dermal filler FAQs

How do I know if I need filler or Botox?

Wrinkle relaxants soften muscle-driven expression lines. Filler restores volume, contour, and softens folds. Many plans use one, the other, or both, depending on what is driving the concern.

Can filler look natural?

Natural-looking results depend on careful product selection, conservative placement, facial assessment, and respecting your existing proportions.

Should I plan downtime?

Plan around swelling or bruising, especially before events. Your provider can give aftercare instructions based on the area treated.
