Managing symptoms that interfere with comfort, sleep, and daily activities.

Sleep Disturbances & Fatigue

Addressing disrupted sleep, nighttime awakenings, and fatigue.

Mood & Cognitive Changes

Bone & Long-Term Health

Our Approach to Menopause Care

Because Every Woman's Experience Is Different

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. We review symptoms, medical history, individual risk factors, and personal goals to develop a treatment plan that reflects your needs and preferences.

Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT)

Discussing benefits, risks, and options for systemic and local vaginal hormone therapies.

Non-Hormonal Treatments

Evidence-based alternatives when hormone therapy is not preferred or appropriate.

Lifestyle & Preventative Health

Reviewing key lifestyle considerations and preventative health strategies to support long-term health and well-being during menopause.

Monitoring & Follow-Up

Assessing response, addressing concerns, and adjusting treatment as needed.

Our goal is to support both symptom management and overall health and quality of life.

What to Expect

A referral from your family physician is required. Download our referral form and provide it to your physician for completion.

2 — Referral Review

Once the completed form is faxed to luma, our medical team will review and triage it. Patients whose referrals are accepted will be contacted about next steps and scheduling.

3 — Complete Your Intake Questionnaire

After referral acceptance, you will receive a comprehensive questionnaire to complete before your appointment, helping us understand your symptoms, history, and goals.

4 — Your Menopause Consultation

Your physician will review your symptoms, history, and health considerations, discuss appropriate options, and develop a personalized plan with you.

Consultation Fees & Eligibility

Eligible physician consultations are covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP), with no out-of-pocket fee for insured physician services. A family physician referral is required before an appointment can be scheduled. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between perimenopause and menopause?

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when hormones fluctuate and cycles may become irregular. Menopause is reached after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period when no other medical cause is present.

How do I know if I am experiencing perimenopause?

Symptoms may include menstrual changes, hot flashes, night sweats, disrupted sleep, mood changes, brain fog, and vaginal dryness. Your physician can assess whether these are related to perimenopause or another condition.

Do I need bloodwork to diagnose menopause?

Not necessarily. For most women over 45, assessment relies on symptoms and menstrual history rather than routine hormone testing. Bloodwork may be useful in particular circumstances, including younger women or suspected alternative conditions.

What is menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), and is it safe?

MHT is among the most effective treatments for hot flashes and night sweats and can help prevent bone loss. For many healthy women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause onset, benefits may outweigh risks. It is not appropriate for everyone, so treatment is individualized.

What if I do not want hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy is not the only option. Evidence-based non-hormonal medications and supportive lifestyle approaches may be appropriate depending on symptoms and preferences.

Can I receive care if I am still having regular periods?

Yes. Menopause-related symptoms can occur while cycles are still regular. Your physician can assess symptoms and recommend appropriate options.

Are consultations covered by Alberta Health?

Yes. Eligible insured physician consultations are covered by AHCIP for patients with valid provincial coverage. Prescription medications and some other services may not be covered.

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

Yes. Download the referral form and provide it to your family physician. Once completed and faxed to luma, the referral will be triaged. Patients with accepted referrals will be contacted.

How should I prepare for my first consultation?

Complete the comprehensive intake questionnaire sent after your referral is accepted, and have an up-to-date list of medications and supplements available.

Will I need follow-up appointments?

Follow-up appointments may be arranged to monitor symptoms, assess response, and adjust treatment. Once stable, ongoing care and prescription renewals transition back to your family physician.

What does MSCP certification mean?

MSCP stands for Menopause Society Certified Practitioner. It is a professional certification recognizing specialized knowledge in menopause and midlife women's health, demonstrated through a certification examination. All physicians providing this service at luma hold the designation.
